Venue
LOCATION
The FSMNLP 2008 workshop will be held at the Joint-Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC). The Centre is situated near Ispra (in the Province of Varese in Lombardy), a small village situated on the Southeast shore of the beatiful lake Lago Maggiore, about 45 car minutes from the Swiss border (in the North) and the city of Milan (in the East).

ARRIVAL
The most convenient way to come to Ispra and JRC is by car since there is no easy public transport in the area. We suggest that participants rent a car directly at the airport where they fly in. Most airline companies provide convenient flight+car packages. Another advantage of coming by car is the possibility to explore the beatifull region of Lago Maggiore and other beautiful regions nearby by car.
For the participants, who do not wish or can not arrive by car, we will book rooms in the Hotel Europa in Ispra (see the list of the hotels in the accomodation section) and transport will also be provided from this hotel to JRC and from JRC to the hotel for the 2 days of the workshop. Therefore participants without their own transportation are kindly asked not to book elsewhere.
Further, we will organize a transport from Hotel Europa to the airport after the workshop upon request. Once the registration is open (June), you will be asked to tick the appropriate box if you are interested in the transport to the airport.
Arrival by air
Milan has three international airports : Malpensa, Linate, and Orio al Serio. People flying should try to fly to Milan Malpensa airport (MXP), as it is the closest one to Ispra.
Malpensa: the distance between Malpensa Airport and JRC is 25 km (around 30 minutes car ride). A cab ride from Malpensa to the JRC would normally cost around euro 45 (one way). Malpensa airport is served by several airlines, with nonstop flights from many European and US cities. All major airlines offer direct flights to Malpensa, as well as budget airlines.
Linate: the distance between Linate and JRC is 85 km (around 1 hour and 15 minutes car ride).
Orio al Serio: the distance between Orio al Serio and JRC is 130 km (around 1.5 hour car ride). Some budget airlines offer direct flights to Milano Orio al Serio. However, we do not recomend this airport since car or bus ride from this airport might take longer time due to heavy traffic around Milano and taxis are very expensive (200/250 Euro). It is also important to note that we will be unable to offer any transport to/from there.
Arrival by car
From Milan
- On the motorway, follow signs for Autostrada Laghi (A8) direction Gravellona Toce and Gallarate.
- Take exit at Sesto Calende/ Vergiate.
- Travel on SS 629 towards Laveno - Luino.
- On SS 629, turn left at the traffic light (after 7 km) in Travedona-Monate
- Follow the signs CCR ISPRA towards Cadrezzate and Ispra. The road will take you right to the JRC-Ispra entrance.
From Switzerland
- Arriving from San Gottardo or San Benardino (CH), follow the A2 to the Italian border.
- Continue into Italy on the A9.
- After Saronno turn north on the A8 direction Gallarate and Sesto Calende.
- When you are on the A8 follow the description as arriving from Milan (from point 2)
ONCE IN ISPRA
For those who will be driving their own car, JRC main entrance is located on 2749 of Via Enrico Fermi, Ispra, by a roundabout on the border between the villages of Ispra and Cadrezzate (map of the nearby area).
From Ispra historical center, just take Via Roma, turn right at the first roundabout, then left, cross the railway and go on until you see the main gate on the left of a roundabout.
PARKING AT JRC
There is an external, large parking lot just to the right of the JRC main entrance. As the workshop venue is just a short walk from the Reception desk at the Entrance, and entering by car will require additional time for registration of the vehicle, parking there is the most convenient solution. There are many hotels in the area, and most are fairly inexpensive. The rates range between 30 and 100 Euro. For the participants, who arrive without a car, one of the two hotels in Ispra will be chosen. If you arrive by car it might be worth considering Angera since it is very close to Ispra and it offers perfect possibilities to explore Lago Maggiore and the islands by boat.ISPRA
